Semana Santa in Antigua Central America Caribbean » Guatemala » Capital Region » AntiguaWell, here we are, living in California for a little over one week now. So far, things are going very well, especially after a new boiler was installed in our building and we don’t have to walk over to the next building to shower. So now the time is ripe to set out, have a look around and explore our surroundings. We took off without much of a plan except that we were in hopes of a good view of the Golden Gate Bridge. Much to our surprise our drive was only about 8 miles. We really didn’t realize we [View Full Entry]
With the ride on the chicken bus from Guatemala city to Chichi still fresh on my mind, I was a little apprehensive of going back most of the same route. I’d made sure I had breakfast (a nice omelette and 2 cups of coffee, of which the second was one too many) and met up with ‘the moles’ again. I nearly had my arm dislocated by the bus guy who wanted to put my backpack on top of the bus, but who had forgotten I was still attached to it, and Sarah was dragged along with her backpack as it got [View Full Entry]

The bus drives up dangerously close to the bumper of the car in front. Our grumpy bald-headed driver blows the horn repeatedly, mouthing unintelligible insults, pressing his lips together in anger. The radio plays Elvis Presley's 'Jailhouse Rock', and he turns up the volume to a deafening volume, adjusts his sunglasses, and proceeds with harassing the poor driver in front of us. We're sitting right behind the driver, who serves as our principal source of entertainment this morning. The ride from Valletta to ÄŠirkewwa, the harbour where the ferry to Gozo departs, takes around two hours, which makes it one of [View Full Entry]

Our next stop is 2 hours south of La Rochelle, in the city of Bordeaux. This stop is about family, friends, more food and more wine...and obviously, more sunny time! I haven't been to Bordeaux for years. The new tram system is now fully in place, but we didn't use it. The front of most houses has also been cleaned up the last 5 years, giving a new youth to the Grand Dame of Bordeaux. We could have made a single entry for the vineyards of Bordeaux and the city itself. But here it is, Bordeaux wine region is pretty huge [View Full Entry]

What a great experience to work in Virginia in Midlothian exactly. I got to know my colleagues much better, my office was just great. I had never had an office just for myself and a complete view on the woods with thousands of birds with all colors. My favorite one is the Cardinal, what a wonderful red, it's stunning ! Each week end Jon and I travelled through the country side and this part of the US is just wonderful. Probably so far, my favorite ! I loved the dynamic of the nature, the views and the rolling hills are my [View Full Entry]

It is your little China right here in Manila. THE OLDEST CHINATOWN IN THE WORLD. Outside of China, of course. A place where the pre-hispanic Chinese-Filipinos were evacuated to when the Spaniards came and ruled this land since the 16th century for nearly 400 years. From the walled city of Intramuros where the ruling Spaniards ruled, our Chinoys ("Chinese-Filipinos" aka "Tsinoys") were forced to relocate themselves across the Pasig River to a place called "Binondo", from the word "binundok" or mountainous area in the local language. At the time, our Chinoys were called "Sangleys" and were years ahead of the Spanish [View Full Entry]

Cape Reinga - a great way to finish 3 months in New Zealand Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Ninety Mile BeachApril 24th 2011
Well, we’ve had a great time exploring New Zealand over the past 3 months and we’ve done a serious amount of tramping along the way. So it seems fitting that we conclude our trip to this fine country with one more multi-day trek, this time at the very northern tip of the island. The Cape Reinga Coastal Walkway is nearly 50 km long and begins at the northern end of Ninety Mile Beach, continues across secluded beaches, dunes and cliffs to the lighthouse and then finishes at Spirits Bay on the Pacific side. There are no huts along the way, which [View Full Entry]
